Dutch mayors want gun laws shake-up
Many big-city mayors want to ban members of shooting clubs keeping their weapons at home.
They would prefer to see all guns kept on club premises, according to a survey of the mayors of the 30 biggest local authorities in the Netherlands conducted by the RTL news station.
The mayors also think people applying for gun permits should have to produce medical certificates to show that they are psychologically fit to hold a gun licence. The survey was prompted by the recent shooting in Norway and the one in the Dutch town of Alphen aan den Rijn last April.
Jaap Timmer, an expert from Amsterdam’s Free University VU, believes it would be good to have a test to see whether or not candidates are psychologically fit to hold gun permits. However, he is against all guns being held at shooting clubs, saying these “enormous weapons depots” would be targetted by criminals.
