Dutch may block talks on Montenegro joining EU

The Dutch European Affairs Committee says Montenegro should not be given a date to start EU accession negotiations, the news websites report.

The committee says Montenegro needs to do more on improving the rule of law and fighting organised crime and corruption.

Montenegro is hoping to start accession negotiations with the EU at the European Council meeting on 9 December. Dutch Socialist Party MP Harry van Bommel told Montenegrin media that the committee’s conclusion was preliminary and he was still optimistic that the country would get a negotiation start date. However, he added that Montenegro might first be presented with an EU action plan on crime, corruption and the rule of law.

Montenegrin media are now predicting that the country is unlikely to get its hoped-for start date, Balkan Insight reports.

The Dutch Lower House is expected to vote on the committee’s findings by the end of November.
