There has been a strong increase in the number of manual trade businesses.

The Dutch Association of Manual Trades, which represents 7,200 businesses in 36 branches, says growth was strongest in healthcare.

The number of independent hairdressers grew by 22 percent. There has been a similar rise in the number of window cleaners, clothing repairs shops, roofing companies and pavers.

Most manual trades companies started after 2004 are being run by a single person. A spokesperson for the association says most single-person businesses do well, because consumers are willing to pay for quality services.
