LEEUWARDEN -- A 28-year-old man from Leeuwarden who was seriously injured in a knife attack earlier this month has died after doctors took him off life support.

Niels Peter Kooistra was left paralysed from the neck down after being stabbed on 2 Aug and had to be permanently attached to an artificial respirator.

The victim was stabbed repeatedly by an 18-year-old who mistook a greeting in the Frisian language for an insult. A fight broke up between the two and Kooistra apparently cycled off with the man's coat. Kooistra had second thoughts and decided to return the coat. He cycled back to the other man who then stabbed him repeatedly.

The Public Prosecutor's office says Kooistra's death may mean more serious charges may be be brought against his alleged attacker, who is being held in custody.

Murder or manslaughter
A spokesman for the Public Prosecutor's Office, Henk Mous, says the fact that Kooistra's life support was switched off may affect the charges.

The provisional indictment has already been changed because the victim has died. It now specifies either murder or manslaughter. the final charges will be decided upon just before the case goes to court.

Mous says: "What caused the victim's death is a legal question. The answer depends on the extent to which the defendant can be deemed culpable for the results of his actions."
