THE NETHERLANDS - The National Lottery (Staatsloterij) is to pay the Post Code Lottery (Postcodeloterij) EUR 100,000 in a damages settlement for spying on its competitor.

Two years ago, it surfaced that the National Lottery board had employed an accountant and a private detective in 2001 to unearth information which would discredit its rival.

National Lottery Director Yvonne van Oort has now written to the Post Code Lottery to apologise. It has been agreed that the damages money will be donated to a good cause and that the National Lottery will pay the legal costs incurred by its rival.

A Post Code Lottery spokesman says the matter is now closed: "We are satisfied now the National Lottery has admitted its guilt and done that in public," he explains.
