AMSTERDAM — At least 2,000 Dutch Christians took part in a 24-hour prayer marathon to counter the forces of darkness on Tuesday.
Some Christians fear that Tuesday's date, 6 June 2006, signifies 666, the biblical number of the Devil. They are worried the date will usher in calamities and even the end of the world.
Mathijs Piet of Ambassadors Ministries, a Netherlands-based evangelical organisation, called on Christians in 21 countries to hold a 24-hour prayer vigil against satanic forces to mark devil's day. He said he expected Christians in at least 50 places in the Netherlands will come together to defeat the Devil's nefarious plans.
"We believe that the plans the enemy has for this date will be destroyed through violent worship and praise," He said. "We are inviting the entire world to be part of this huge unity project."
The prayer vigil started at 6pm on Monday 5 June to correspond to Jewish calculation of when the new day begins. The event ends on 6pm on Tuesday. Most of the participants are Protestants.
