Dutch judge and columnist dies at 83

Former judge Ben Asscher was president of the Amsterdam court from 1983 to 1993 and was well-known for being able to solve social conflicts.

BAARN - Judge and columnist Ben Asscher has died at the age of 83, at his home in the Dutch town of Baarn.

He was president of the Amsterdam court (supreme judge) from 1983 to 1993. He became well-known for finding solutions to social conflicts in turbulent times such as introducing the use of quick interim injunctions between squatters and property owners to avoid long-winded court cases.

Asscher also started the phenomenon of the briefing judge who explains judicial matters to journalists. He also wrote a column for the NRC Handelsblad.
