AMSTERDAM – Dutch troops are involved in a large-scale operation started in the Afghan province of Helmand today. There are Dutch officers, General Ton van Loon for instance, among the staff of the regional command for southern Afghanistan.

Dutch F-16 combat aircraft will provide air support, as they have done in the area already.

A spokesperson for the defence department confirmed this today. A Dutch reserve company, temporarily stationed in Kandahar, is available for the offensive, as are Apache combat helicopters. Whether they will be actually deployed in the operation depends on the situation.
