Dutch internet security firm far from secure

DigiNotar, the Dutch company responsible for the security of Dutch government websites, is itself far from secure, a report shows.

The company’s computers, the NOS writes, lacked antivirus programmes and a key server operated without the latest software updates.

Though the company’s different systems were supposed to work independently, the hackers were able to get from one computer to another. And staff were using passwords that were easy to discover.

In July, Iranian hackers broke into the company to look for data of Iranian internet users, not Dutch ones. The breach has since been closed and government websites are now reported safe again.
