THE NETHERLANDS - An increasing number of Dutch people want Barack Obama to become the next president of the United States. A poll of 1,200 people showed that 85 percent favour the Democratic candidate. In June, the percentage was already high at 79 percent.

Republican candidate John McCain enjoys the support of a meagre 9 percent of the Dutch. More than three-quarters of those interviewed expect Obama to win the election on Tuesday.

An overwhelming majority feels he would be a good president, while two-thirds fear he may be assassinated.
