Dutch immigration minister: deport failed asylum seekers sooner

Immigration Minister Gerd Leers has confirmed that he will write parliament a letter in which he proposes tightening existing legislation regarding failed asylum seekers.

At present, many failed asylum seekers file an appeal against the second rejection of their original request shortly before their scheduled deportation, sometimes just moments before they are to board an airplane. Under the proposed legislation, asylum seekers would no longer be allowed to await the outcome of their appeal in the Netherlands if no new facts or circumstances emerged.
