AMSTERDAM - Imams are not involved in whipping-up hatred in the Netherlands and calling believers to arms; they are more concerned about their own legal position.

This was the message conveyed to MP Ger Koopmans (CDA) at a meeting with Moroccan imams based in this country on Wednesday.

The meeting followed calls by the CDA to sack imams and others spreading hate from their positions and confiscate their passports and driving licenses. The suggestions have not been well received by other parties.

The imams said (in Dutch) they were more busy preventing radicalisation than stirring things up, and challenged Koopmans to give specific examples.
