Dutch human rights policy 'compromised'
The opposition Democrat 66 party says it is astonished that Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal's policies no longer mention the fact that the Netherlands also calls its allies to account regarding human rights violations. This has been an explicit part of foreign ministry strategy for the past 30 years.
The Demcorats have submitted a motion to fix this apparent oversight and pointed out that it was Chris van der Klaauw, like Mr Rosenthal a minister from the VVD party, who introduced this policy in the 1970s.
Fellow VVD MP Klaas Dijkhoff replied that in his view the Netherlands always calls countries to account for human rights violations and that it was unnecessary to state specifically that this applies to allied countries too, although back then Minister Van der Klaauw "must have had good reason to do so".
