AMSTERDAM — New Zealand police have launched a massive manhunt for two men who robbed and terrorised a honeymooning Dutch couple last week.
The Dutch couple was kidnapped, robbed and the woman was raped while her husband was forced to watch.
The crimes took place on Friday near Paihia in the Bay of Islands region, located in the north of New Zealand's north island.
Police suspect the culprits originated from the area.
The couple has since received a flood of sympathetic messages from New Zealand nationals, police chief Mike Pannett said.
Two masked men forced entry to the couple's camper van on Friday night as the couple prepared to go to bed for the night.
Threatened with a rifle, the couple was tied up and forced to go to several cash machines to withdraw money. The woman was raped in front of her husband.
The couple was later dumped at a cemetery and sought assistance from a nearby house.
New Zealand police have received dozens of tips and are searching the camper van for clues. The suspects were well built and are aged between 20 and 40.
Police are also looking for witnesses who were located near State Highway 1 when the kidnapping took place.
