Dutch holidaying less and staying closer to home

The financial crisis is believed to be the reason why Dutch people are taking shorter holidays or holidays in neighbouring countries.

The Netherlands – Dutch people are expected to take fewer holidays or holiday at nearby destinations this summer, reports the Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB).

The association expects 11 million Dutch to take a summer holiday lasting a week or longer this year –500,000 fewer people than 2008 – because of the financial crisis.

About 2.7 million or an increase of four percent over last year will choose to holiday in the Netherlands while around five percent less than 2008 or eight million people will on holiday abroad.

The most popular foreign holiday destination remains France, with more than 1.5 million Dutch visitors. Spain comes in second, followed by Italy, Germany and Greece.
