AMSTERDAM — The Netherlands is a world leader when it comes to eating sweets.
Dutch people eat on average about 30kg of sweets per year, the Snacks and Sweets Study Centre (SSZ) said on Monday.
In total, sweets represent 8.5 percent of food and luxury foods consumed by the Dutch public.
Biscuits, cakes and pastries are the favourites, representing 75 percent of consumption last year.
In 2004, some 21,400 ton in sweets was eaten by Dutch consumers.
That figure was contributed to by the cool summer months and events such as the Euro 2004 football championships and the Olympic Games.
