On the whole, Dutch gymnasts could only manage moderate performances on Sunday in Tokyo for the first day of the World Championships qualifying rounds. The team did especially disappointingly on the horse and balance beam, with three gymnasts falling during their routines.

Epke Zonderland risks not reaching the finals on the horizontal bar, managing only fourth place after three of the eight subdivisions. Jeffrey Wammes is currently fourth in the vault.

Lord of the rings Only Yuri van Gelder was satisfied with his third place on the rings and looks set to go through to the finals. It is four years since he last contested a world championships. He was suspended by the Dutch Gymnastics Union in 2009 after admitting using cocaine.
