29th Football Player of the Year gala
Ajax player Luis Suárez has been nominated best player in the Dutch first division in the 2009/2010 football season. The Uruguyan striker was awarded the Golden Shoe at the 29th Football Player of the Year gala. Newspaper De Telegraaf awards a grade to all players after each round in the competition based on technique, tactics, and energy. Luis Suárez garnered the most points in the overall standings. The Silver Shoe was awarded to Dries Mertens, the Belgian striker playing for FC Utrecht, and the Bronze Shoe to Ajax midfielder Demy de Zeeuw. Luis Suárez was also lauded as top scorer, with 35 goals. He received the accompanying statuette from Ruud Gullit. Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel was nominated Talent of the Year. Referee Roelof Luinge, who has since retired, was awarded the Golden Card for the third time in a row as the best referee of the 2009/2010 football season.
Ruud van Nistelrooij back on the national team
Ruud van Nistelrooij will return to the Dutch national team. The 34-year-old striker currently playing for the German club Hamburger SV was called by national coach Bert van Marwijk to replace Robin van Persie who is injured and will not be able to play in the European Championship qualification matches against San Marino on Friday and Finland on 7 September. Van Nistelrooij will join the national squad on Tuesday morning. He last played on the national team in a lost match against Russia during the 2008 European Championships. The talented striker has suffered a number of injuries over the past few years. He was eager to play in the World Cup in South Africa but was not selected by Van Marwijk. After the World Cup, Van Nistelrooij said he still wanted to make a come-back with the national team. He underscored his ambitions with an excellent start in the German Bundesliga. The former striker of PSV, Manchester United and Real Madrid scored three goals in the first two matches of the competition. So far, Ruud van Nistelrooij has played 64 matches for the Dutch national team in which he scored 33 goals.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to join Schalke 04
Schalke 04 coach Felix Magath has confirmed that striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has decided to leave AC Milan and will continue his career at the Bundesliga club.
Schalke has reportedly paid AC Milan 14 million euros for the transfer. The future looked bleak for Huntelaar after the Italian club had bought Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Barcelona.
