AMSTERDAM — The Netherlands is officially in the midst of a flu epidemic which is defined by the crucial mass of 15 people per 10,000 falling ill with the virus.

Well-known virologist Ab Osterhaus said the actual number of people who are ill would probably be much higher. But because they do not go the doctor, they are not registered in official figures.

The southern provinces of Zeeland, North Brabant and Limburg are currently the hardest hit. In every 10,000 residents, 26 are registered as suffering from the flu, figures from the National Influenza Centre indicated on Friday.

This is compared with 15 per 10,000 in the provinces of North and South Holland and 6 per 10,000 in Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe. In the remaining provinces, the figure is 11 per 10,000.

Health authorities expect that the influenza epidemic will spread even further across the country, news service NOS reported.
