THE NETHERLANDS - Four members of a Dutch family have fallen to their deaths in the Alps.

A 57-year-old father and his three children between the ages of 16 and 23 were on their descent of Mont Dolent, a peak of 3,800 metres on the border between France, Italy and Switzerland.

They were joined together by ropes and it is thought that one of them slipped, taking the rest down in a fall of some 500 metres.

The mother of the family witnessed the accident and has been admitted to hospital suffering from shock. The family were all members of the Dutch mountaineering association.

Four French climbers encountered problems on the same mountain, sustaining serious injuries earlier in the month.
