AMSTERDAM — The Netherlands is pulling out all stops to obtain an important economic portfolio in the new European Commission and is keeping its candidate secret until the last possible moment, it was reported Thursday.

The Dutch government is reportedly eyeing one of the four most influential economic posts in the EC, namely internal markets, competition, trade or monetary affairs, news service euobserver.com reported.

The Netherlands and Denmark are the only states that have not yet disclosed the name of their candidate for the EC. Dutch Cabinet sources claim that by not publicly committing to a candidate, they have a better chance of obtaining one of the eyed posts.

The Netherlands — which currently holds the internal markets post — is up against Germany, France, Poland, Spain, the UK and Ireland in a battle for the four important economic portfolios.

It was previously thought the Dutch were keen on the agriculture or transport and energy portfolios.
