Dutch economy shrinks in third quarter: official data

The Dutch economy shrank by 0.1 percent in the third quarter after growth of 0.9 percent in the second quarter, official preliminary data showed on Friday.

The central statistics office which published the figure noted that in each of the four preceding quarters, gross domestic product had expanded and that in the third quarter activity showed expansion of 1.8 percent on a 12-month comparison.

A month of contraction at a time of uncertainty over EU-wide recovery from a downturn is a matter of concern for policymakers, since two quarters running of falling output from the level in the previous quarter would mark a recession.
