Dutch drug baron to pay 800,000 euros
A court in Breda has ruled that drug baron Eddy S. must pay the state almost 800,000 euros of his criminal profits. In 2003, he was sentenced to nine years in prison. The Public Prosecutor had prior demanded payment of over 5 million euros.
The 61-year-old convict headed the so-called York gang in Amsterdam at the end of the 1990s. He is believed to have made a fortune by exporting synthetic drugs to the US, UK and Israel and importing cocaine from South America.
The court did not demand the full amount be paid because a judge found insufficient evidence to support suspicions that the man was involved in an Israeli gang busted in 1996. The court ruled that Eddy S. only could have earned 4,000,000 euros through buying and selling drugs in Amsterdam. How much time has passed since his sentencing also played a role in the decision.
Eddy S. announced immediately after the hearing that he would appeal the decision.
