Dutch darts champion allegedly blackmailed
Dutch Darts champion Raymond van Barneveld was allegedly blackmailed by a man who threatened to publish sex tapes on the internet. The 26-year-old suspect from Rotterdam is to appear in court in The Hague on Wednesday.
He allegedly told the darts player that the only way to avoid publication was by paying him 10,000 euros. It is not clear whether the sum was actually paid. The Public Prosecutors' Office says Raymond van Barneveld and his wife received threatening phone calls and text messages such as: 'Think of your children! And your wife! We know which schools they go to'.
The video used to blackmail 'Barney' reportedly shows him with another woman. The suspect allegedly threatened to send the tape to TV channel SBS6 or post it on the internet himself. The 'other woman' in the tape is reportedly from the city of Assen, and an acquaintance of the suspect. She is said to have met the multiple world darts champion during a demonstration game. Mr Van Barneveld reportedly ended the 'intimate contact' this year.
The suspect denies all charges; his lawyer says the sex tape was never found.
