Dutch cucumbers are free of EHEC bacteria
Dutch vegetables have been declared free of EHEC bacteria. That is the result of research carried out for the Dutch market garden producers association Productschap Tuinbouw, following deaths in Germany caused by an outbreak of EHEC Entero Haemorrhagic E Coli bacteria on cucumbers.
Various samples were taken from Dutch cucumbers, tomatoes, salad and red peppers, but no EHEC-bacteria were found. The tests were carried out by a German institute.
"Dutch vegetables are safe and can therefore be eaten," said a spokesperson for Productschap Tuinbouw. "We hope that consumer confidence in our foreign buyers will be restored now the result of these tests are known."
No EHEC bacteria were found either in tests by the new Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority nVWA on 168 samples of mainly cucumbers in supermarkets, at wholesalers and from growers .
The nVWA will continue to test vegetables until the source of the contamination has been found.
