The natural parents of the baby are a Flemish couple in their twenties. They already had a baby and when the woman became pregnant again, felt they would not be able to keep it because of the financial implications.
On the Internet they went in search of couples wanting a baby. They discovered a young Dutch couple.
The couple purchased the baby for an undisclosed amount and came to pick it up one day after the birth.
The baby was registered in Ghent using the name of the Dutchman. It is now 4 months old and living in the Netherlands.
The Dutch current affairs programme Network investigated the matter. The Jan Palfijn hospital in Ghent was alerted last week.
The hospital brought in the the police. Ghent public prosecutors are now investigating the matter.
The natural parents have not been taken into custody, but risk a ten year gaol sentence.
