Swiss media reported Thursday the death of a 55-year-old Dutch mountaineer. The man fell during a climb along the south side of the Mönch mountain in the Bernese Alps.

A guide from the area saw the man fall about 200 metres and immediately notified emergency services. The Dutchman was found dead at an altitude of 3,800 metres. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still unknown, as is the man’s identity.

The Mönch stands 4,107 metres high and lies just 55 kilometres southeast of the Swiss capital, Bern. The mountain, along with the adjacent Eiger and Jungfrau, is a popular destination for climbers.

The accident is the second fatal incident on Mönch in a week. Last Thursday a 60-year-old Austrian climber lost his life on the mountain.
