Dutch celebrate despite economic crisis

In spite of the economic crisis gripping Europe and much of the world, the Dutch are still planning to go away during the Christmas/New Year’s holiday period.

According to the Dutch tourist board NBTC, some 750,000 people are expected to go on holiday during the festive season. About half that number will spend the holiday in the Netherlands, which is an increase of 25,000 over last year.

Germany remains the most popular destination for people going abroad but Belgium and Austria are also popular.

The NBTC says there has been no appreciable drop in the number of people going on vacation during the holiday period, which runs from 24 December until 8 January.
