Dutch cabinet refuses to release Iraq documents
The government rejects calls by left-wing parties to publish documents relating to its decision to give political support to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.THE HAGUE – The government has rejected renewed calls by left-wing parties to release documents relating to its decision to give political support to the US-British invasion of Iraq in 2003.
The Labour Party, the Socialist Party, the Green Party, the democrat party D66 and the Animal Rights Party had raised dozens of questions in the Upper House in a bid to gain insight into the decision-making process leading up to the invasion.
Addressing their questions, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende only reiterated that the cabinet stood by its decision.
In 2003 the Dutch government supported the US-led invasion on the grounds that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction and later provided military support.
