Dutch baseball champions honoured

The Dutch national baseball team was officially welcomed home by about 2,000 fans in Haarlem on Friday. Coach Brian Farley’s team won the baseball world championships in Panama last month.

The national team entered the city in a boat and was officially welcomed by Mayor Bernt Schneiders at the Teylers Museum. In the Grote Markt square the players and coaches stepped forward one after the other to be applauded by the Haarlem baseball fans.

The official welcome was postponed for a few weeks because a substantial number of the players live abroad and wanted to visit their families before travelling to the Netherlands for the festivities. Haarlem was selected to officially welcome the champions because it is home to the national baseball week and because of its role in promoting the sport nationally.
