THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch Olympic athletes returning to the Netherlands Monday from Beijing will be taken from Schiphol airport directly to the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, where they will be welcomed by sport fans.
Dutch entertainers and celebrities will be at the stadium which was built for the 1928 games to warm up the crowd.
The sportsmen and women will be received by Queen Beatrix in The Hague in two days’ time.
Global viewing figures for the Beijing Games were higher than previously-held Olympics. In 2004, 3.9 billion people watched the Olympic Games in Athens. This year, the number passed the four-billion mark.
In the Netherlands, however, the Beijing Games attracted fewer viewers than the Athens games four years ago. More than two million people in the Netherlands watched the closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
This was partly because of the six-hour time difference with Beijing. Many of the events were broadcast in the middle of the night or in the early morning.
