Dutch artists call for Netherlands boycott
A group of Dutch artists has urged Americans not to come to the Netherlands in protest against the proposed government cuts in the cultural sector.
On Thursday, an advertisement was published in saying 'Do not enter the Netherlands - Cultural meltdown in progress'.
The advert was placed by Dutch Artists 2011, a group of hundreds of artists and sympathisers who have united to draw attention to the “trans-border value of the Dutch arts”. In a statement they said the wanted to send a wake up call to the world. “The destructive cuts by the Dutch government will have an international negative effect.”
The Dutch government has proposed 200 million euros of cuts to subsidies in the cultural sector. The performing arts and artists will be hit hardest. Value Added Tax on tickets in the cultural sector will also be increased as of 1 July. Demonstrations are due to be held on Monday in The Hague when the culture cuts are to be debated in parliament.
