Dutch appeal court sentences Hutu to life

A Dutch appeal court has sentenced Joseph Mpambara to life imprisonment on charges that he committed war crimes during Rwanda's 1994 genocide.

Joseph Mpambara, a Rwandan Hutu who came to the Netherlands in the mid-1990s, had been convicted of torture by a lower Dutch court in March 2009 and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. That court, however, acquitted Mr Mpambara of war crimes.

Mr Mpambara was tried under a law allowing the prosecution of suspected war criminals living in the Netherlands.
