The Netherlands is to lead a workgroup together with Slovakia to support the transition to democracy in Tunisia.

Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal announced at a conference of the Community of Democracies in Lithuania, that they will focus on three points: "free and fair elections, promoting human rights and the rule of law, and creating jobs - in particular for women and young people."

In addition the minister called for European borders to be opened further for products from the Arab region. His US counterpart Hillary Clinton thanked the Netherlands for taking the initiative in Tunisia.

Tunisia will draw up a plan of action, which the work group will use as a basis. Social and independent organisations will be asked to play a large role in the transition to democracy.
