Dutch Senate to block online medical dossiers

Dutch Senator Hans Engels has said the Upper House will block the introduction of electronic medical dossiers over privacy concerns.

Senator Engels, a leftwing liberal, has announced he will put forward a motion on Tuesday demanding that Health Minister Ab Klink freeze the electronic patient dossier project.

It is expected that the Senate will adopt the motion, given the widespread concern over security gaps in the planned system. The electronic patient dossier would enable all doctors, health care workers and dispensing chemists in the Netherlands to consult patients' records without asking them first.

The motion calls on outgoing Minister Ab Klink to address the privacy concerns before continuing with the project.
