Dutch Premier League midweek results

27th October 2010, Comments 0 comments

There was a full programme of midweek matches in the Dutch Premier League this week, with every match having at least two goals.

On Tuesday, Roda JC drew 1-1 with NEC Nijmegen, which was enough to put Roda, who have only lost once in their first eleven matches this season, into third place in the table - at least for 24 hours. After Wednesday's results, they are in 4th spot.

In Tuesday's other match, Heracles Almelo convincingly beat NAC Breda 4-1. Despite the win, Heracles ended the day still one point behind NAC.

The rest of the matches were on Wednesday. Kick-off times were staggered for live pay-TV coverage. Three matches kicked off at 7pm local time, and in all three the home club was the winner. Ajax Amsterdam beat sc Herenveen 3-1, while FC Groningen beat ADO Den Haag by the same scoreline. It was a little tighter in Doetinchem, where De Graafschap beat AZ Alkmaar 2-1.

There was a boost for the Ajax team and its supporters when goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was passed fit to play, after being substituted in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Excelsior due to a knee injury.

At 8pm there was one game. It was top against bottom when FC Twente played Willem II in Tilburg. Unsurprisingly, FC Twente were the 3-1 winners. Willem II have lost 10 and drawn one of their first 11 matches, having conceded 32 goals and scored just nine. With a third of the season gone, they are already clear favourites for relegation.

But football is a very unpredictable game - just ask Feyenoord. Having suffered the ignomy of their worst-ever defeat - 10-0 - at PSV Eindhoven at the weekend, their coach Mario Been had said that their home match against VVV Venlo was a "must win" game. From 9pm, all eyes were on Rotterdam's De Kuip stadium to see how the team would react to their weekend humiliation, and although the score remained 0-0 until the last quarter of the match, three goals in the final quarter restored some pride as well as confidence and self-belief. It didn't push them up the table though - they are still in a lowly 15th place. At the same time, the result keeps VVV Veno firmly in the relegation zone.

In the other 9 pm games, FC Utrecht beat Excelsior 2-0, and league leaders PSV won by the same scoreline at Vitesse Arnhem. So after everyone had played 11 games, the table looked like this:

PSV 27 points FC Twente 25 Ajax 24 Roda JC 22 FC Groningen 21 FC Utrecht 19 AZ Alkmaar 18 ADO Den Haag 15 NEC 14 sc Herenveen 13 NAC Breda 13 De Graafschap 13 Heracles Almelo 12 Excelsior 11 Feyenoord 11 Vitesse Arnhem 8 VVV Venlo 6 Willem II 1
