THE HAGUE - Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will attend the upcoming G20 summit on the global financial crisis at the invitation of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, his office said Thursday.
The Netherlands is not part of the Group of 20 leading industrialised and developing countries, but Sarkozy - whose nation holds the EU presidency - said on 7 November he might ask the Dutch and the Spanish to attend.
"The prime minister will attend at the request of President Sarkozy," said Balkenende's office. The statement noted that the Netherlands holds 17th place in the global economy, with its financial sector in seventh place.
