Dutch PM hoax Twitter account shut down

The Government Information Service RVD has closed down a Twitter account purporting to be that of Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

The Twitter account @Mark_Rutte had been run by 21-year-old student since May 2010 and had 18,000 followers. Jorik van Engeland claimed it was intended as a joke. The RVD, however, says that the account’s followers could not immediately tell it was not being run by the PM. The closure was exceptional, the RVD stressed.

On Friday, Mr Rutte added Facebook, Hyves and Google+ to his social media network, Dutch daily reports. The Dutch PM already had a YouTube account as well as the one on Twitter. Mr Rutte’s @markrutte Twitter account is said to have 52,000 followers. So far, he has sent out just two tweets, both of which refer to other sites.

A RVD spokesman said civil servants would be keeping the prime minister's profile up-to-date. 'This is a way to give a broader public the opportunity to follow the prime minister,' the spokesman said. cl
