THE NETHERLANDS -- Two parties in the Dutch coalition government are preparing a bill that would make squatting illegal.
Under the terms of the bill, squatters who use violence could be sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.
The parties - the Christian Democrats, the Christian Union and the opposition VVD - claim that the squatting movement has become far more violent and the squatters are no longer motivated by ideological reasons.
In the past few decades, squatters occupied empty buildings in order to highlight the chronic shortage of living space in the Netherlands. Politicians say that nowadays, squatters just want a cheap place to live.
The bill will also give local governments more authority to tackle problems with long-term unoccupied properties. The bill will be sent to the Council of State for advice later on Tuesday.
