Political parties want PM to delay confirming his attendance for the opening of the Olympic Games.

THE NETHERLANDS - The parliamentary parties represented in the Dutch coalition cabinet have written to the government asking it to delay deciding whether Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will attend the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The document was written by the Christian Union and signed by the senior coalition partners, the CDA and the Labour Party.

MPs say that by holding all the options open, the Dutch cabinet will be able to exert pressure on Beijing to improve the human rights situation in the country.

Prime Minister Balkenende has already announced that he is planning to attend the opening ceremony. The Lower House wants to know if he is prepared to reconsider his decision.
