THE NETHERLANDS - A large majority of Dutch MPs has no objection to Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games.

The issue has been a hot topic over recent months, with junior coalition partner, the Christian Union, coming out against Balkenende being present in Beijing.

The party thought this would be a good way of drawing attention to the human rights situation in China. However, most political parties have now decided the prime minister should attend the ceremony.
