Dutch Greenpeace calls for halt to cooling water project

The Dutch branch of Greenpeace is demanding an immediate halt to the construction of a cooling water plant in the Wadden Sea by the energy company Essent and has applied for a court injunction.

The organisation says the construction work is illegal since Essent does not have the necessary permits.

Greenpeace points out that the Wadden Sea - to the north of the Netherlands - is a protected nature reserve where construction has been banned since 2006. It claims the plant will discharge millions of litres of warm water into the Wadden Sea every day.
