The cost-cutting measure will affect 700 jobs in the Netherlands and will be carried out in mid-2009.

THE HAGUE – Dutch information technology consultancy Getronics will cut 1,400 full-time jobs in a cost-cutting drive, it said in a statement on Tuesday.

The total number of jobs scrapped is 10 percent of the ICT company's workforce. Getronics employs around 14,300 people across the globe.

The cuts in the coming months will help save EUR 30 million in 2009, it said. They will include 700 jobs in the Netherlands and will be carried out by mid-2009.

The firm – a subsidiary of telecommunication company KPN – currently employs 14,000 people full-time worldwide.

KPN is calling the measure a precaution to safeguard the profitability of Getronics. The current market in the ICT sector has been hard hit by the economic downturn.
