A Dutch-British couple and their child have been violently attacked in their home in the Portuguese Algarve, according to local media.

Four hooded men broke into the home of the 56-year-old Dutchman and his 51-year-old British wife. The assailants tied up the two, together with their 26-year-old daughter, and then brutally assaulted them.

After 30 minutes, the attackers made off in the victims’ BMW, taking credit cards, money, jewellry and computers with them.

The three family members have been admitted to hospital in Faro with severe facial injuries. Police have not found any trace of the assailants. It’s believed the suspects belong to the same gang that carried out a vicious assault on a home for the elderly in Luz de Tavira one day earlier.

In recent months, crime in the Algarve has become an international concern following numerous domestic robberies targeting mostly middle-aged to elderly couples living in isolated areas. The criminals, often Eastern Europeans or Brazilians, no longer wait to swoop on houses when their occupants are out.
