Dutch Afghanistan mission to go ahead

The planned Dutch police training mission to the Afghan province of Kunduz will go ahead despite a number of large-scale attacks in the region. Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal says that, based on a threat analysis, each day a decision will be made as to whether the Dutch police trainers will be allowed to go to work outside the training centre or whether other security measures will be necessary.

The minister made his statements on Tuesday in parliament, where the Socialist Party SP called on him to scrap the mission. SP MP Harry van Bommel said the situation in the northern Afghan province has deteriorated substantially since January, when the decision was taken.

However, Mr Rosenthal says the city of Kunduz is still relatively safe. “And we never said there would be no risks.”
