AMSTERDAM — A motorist, 37, was arrested for drunken and dangerous driving after he caused six collisions on the A12 near Zoetermeer on Monday evening.

The culprit and another motorist were injured in the mayhem. The motorway to Utrecht was closed off for two hours and 30 minutes, a spokesperson for the national police service KLPD said.

The incident began when the car driven by the drunken man struck a truck. His vehicle spun around and the man proceeded on his journey against the direction of oncoming traffic. This led to five more collisions.

The drunken man was taken to hospital with injuries to his face, neck and leg. He was later arrested for drunken and dangerous driving. Details of the other motorist's injuries were not disclosed by the police.

The rest of the traffic was diverted over nearby slip roads, minimising the delays caused by the crashes.
