MAASTRICHT (ANP) – A 36-year-old Portuguese man who lives in France drove into a sidewalk terrace in Maastricht injuring five people on Sunday afternoon. The man had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, police announced on Monday.

The man was taken into custody and questioned. The police are also running tests to see whether he had been using other drugs.

Two of the five people injured have since been released from hospital but three are still receiving treatment for broken bones. Two suffered serious injuries.

The Portuguese driver was at a stop-light and accidentally had the car in reverse when the light changed. He pushed down on the gas pedal and shot backward into the busy terrace.
