The alleged killer of Dutch student Rob Pignicky, who was murdered in Guatemala in 2008, has been arrested by authorities in Mexico city.

Spanish newspaper ADN reports that Marvin Montiel Marín, known as ‘El Taquero’ of The Taco Vendor, was apprehended together with his girlfriend Sara Elizabeth Cruz, both of whom will be extradited to Guatemala.

The 28-year-old Dutchman was travelling on a bus in November 2008 with 15 Nicaraguans to Guatemala airport. He was about to fly home to the Netherlands.

The bus never reached Guatemala city, but was ambushed in the Zacapa area, some 140km from the capital, where drug gangs are known to operate. All of the passengers were allegedly tortured and shot before the attackers set fire to the vehicle. Both Marín and Cruz were part of a drug and arms smuggling organisation. Parts of the bus, which first set out from the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, had been torn away as if someone were looking for secret compartments.

Identification of the victims was difficult, as their bodies were so badly burned that even their gender could not be initially established.
