THE HAGUE -- Interior Minister Guusje ter Horst placed the police force in the province of Drenthe under financial supervision. The force has a large budget deficit, and says it will need an extra EUR 23 million until 2018.

Ms Ter Horst gave the Drenthe police force an additional EUR 8 million. She says she is prepared to make more funds available, but is waiting for results of an investigation into the financial problem, expected by the end of 2008.

The police force says it spent large sums of money on training new officers, due to a high retirement rate.
