WEURT - Dozens of people have fallen ill after visiting a bird show organised in Weurt (near Nijmegen) by the Friends of the Birds foundation. Six people were in serious enough condition to be admitted to hospital. The regional health authority GGD is investigating whether it is a case of contagious psittacosis, also called parrot disease.

150 to 200 people visited the show on 3 and 4 November, according to Friends of the Birds foundation secretary Geert Willems. It takes about 10 days before infection with parrot disease manifests symptoms.

On Wednesday it emerged that many people involved in the foundation were suffering the same symptoms, which include sore throat, chills, and flu-like complaints.

Five members of the foundation are in hospital in Nijmegen. A judge for the show is in hospital in Eindhoven.

The Nijgmegen GGD says that it will soon be able to tell whether the symptoms are indeed being caused by parrot disease. But before that point the organisation first wants to talk with the treating physicians and members of the bird foundation to find out exactly what happened. The GGD expects to be able to say more about how to handle a possible outbreak of the disease later Friday afternoon.
